National Geographic Police Confirmed UFO Sighting

Overview

A recent documentary segment by National Geographic has brought renewed attention to a striking police-confirmed UFO sighting in southern Illinois. The incident, involving multiple law enforcement officers and a civilian witness, centers on a massive, silent, and triangular object observed traversing the skies in the early morning hours. The event, captured in both firsthand accounts and police dispatch recordings, has fueled ongoing discussions about law enforcement encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP).

The Sighting

The chain of sightings began when Melvin Null, a local truck driver and business owner, observed an unusually bright, silent object descending slowly in the sky over Highland, Illinois. “It was just coming down out of the sky real slow. No noise, just quiet. I couldn’t see any wings or anything. Just floating right through the midair up there,” Null recalled in his interview with National Geographic.

Concerned that his experience might be dismissed, Null drove directly to the Highland Police Department to report what he had seen. His report set in motion a series of police observations across neighboring towns as the object moved westward.

Police Pursuit and Observations

Highland police relayed Null’s report to nearby townships, prompting a swift response from local officers. Ed Barton, the first officer to respond, confirmed the sighting over police radio: “There’s a very bright white light east of town and it keeps changing colors. It’s heading westbound now.” Officer David Martin provided a more detailed account after spotting the object near Shiloh: “I saw this large floating object moving very slowly. It was probably about a football field in length. It had three large bright lights underneath it. I honestly don’t know what it was, other than I know it wasn’t a plane, helicopter, or blimp.

The object was tracked as it passed over several towns, including Lebanon, Shiloh, Milstad, and Dupo. Detective Mark Lino, driving eastbound on Highway 50, described his own close encounter: “At first, I thought it was a bunch of helicopters flying in formation. As I drew closer, I saw it crossing the roadway. It was unlike anything I have ever seen before. Triangle-shaped, with lights attached, and flying in total silence.

In a particularly striking moment, Lino attempted to listen for engine noise and, hearing nothing, tried to pursue the object. “By the time I backed up and tried to see it, it had moved at least a mile away, if not further. That quick, I was just astonished.

Context and Implications

In total, six people—including five police officers—reported witnessing the object that night, each offering remarkably consistent descriptions. The officers’ professional training and corroborated observations have lent significant weight to the case, which remains unexplained despite multiple investigations. The event is noted for the erratic, silent maneuvers of the object, which appeared to defy conventional aircraft capabilities.

This incident is among the most well-documented law enforcement UAP encounters in recent memory and continues to be cited in discussions about the need for systematic reporting and investigation of such events. As debate over the origins and nature of UAPs continues, cases like this highlight the importance of credible, multi-witness reports—especially those from trained observers in law enforcement.
