In both cases, the findings are scientifically valuable, but they remain unconfirmed and open to interpretation.

The problem is not a lack of curiosity or effort. Over time, searches have expanded from narrow radio experiments into broad surveys of the sky, multiple wavelengths and a wide range of signal types. Projects such as SETI@home processed billions of candidate events, but most were eventually identified as radio interference, noise or artifacts of measurement. The scale of these searches can sound comprehensive, yet they still cover only a fraction of the possible combinations of location, timing, frequency and transmission method that an extraterrestrial intelligence might use.

Why UAP reports do not settle the question

The article also notes that governments have logged thousands of UAP reports, but those accounts are not evidence of alien origin by themselves. UAPs are, by definition, observations that remain unexplained at the time of reporting.
