Overview
Unexplained lights have reportedly reappeared over Cody, Wyoming, after a seasonal pattern that previously lasted from November through February. According to Cowboy State Daily, local resident Jezriah Krubeck said he began seeing nearly two dozen luminous objects rising from Cedar Mountain, west of Cody, during nighttime observations last year. After disappearing for a period, the lights returned in late September.
“Within the last two or three nights, I'm starting to see them again,” Krubeck told the newspaper. He described the objects as appearing like “orbs floating up over the mountain,” before moving toward one another and traveling along the mountain’s ridgeline from left to right.
Observations Over Cedar Mountain
Krubeck, who holds a doctorate in education, said he initially approached the sightings cautiously and attempted to find an ordinary explanation. “I wanted to approach it more from an empirical perspective,” he said. “I wanted to disprove it.” He also encouraged neighbors to observe the lights, saying several people saw them but generally did not pursue the matter further.
He said the objects appeared to behave unlike stars, meteors or other familiar celestial phenomena. According to Krubeck, the lights sometimes changed direction, stopped, and appeared to interact with one another. He also reported shining a small laser toward them, after which the objects seemed to stop—an observation that has not been independently verified.
Krubeck further said the lights did not correspond with satellite-tracking information and did not display the flashing navigation lights typically associated with aircraft. At the same time, he noticed what appeared to be an increase in conventional air traffic after the orbs became active. He estimated that four or five aircraft would sometimes pass over the mountain, compared with the smaller number of planes he usually observed.
A Separate Sighting in the Bighorn Mountains
The report also describes a separate observation by Casey Edwards, a gold miner and tattoo artist. On a Wednesday night, Edwards said he saw a single light while driving near the Medicine Wheel area of the Bighorn Mountains. The light moved, stopped abruptly and remained visible as he continued toward a nearby camp.
Edwards said he began recording and then noticed several additional lights. By the time he reached camp, he estimated that five or six were visible. He described them as hovering and moving slightly from side to side, appearing to compensate for wind. Edwards said he first considered whether the objects might be drones used by ranchers to monitor cattle, but he did not settle on an explanation.
No Confirmed Identification
The reported observations remain unconfirmed and do not establish that the lights were extraterrestrial or otherwise anomalous. Atmospheric effects, distant aircraft, drones, balloons, reflections and perspective can all make distant lights difficult to identify, particularly over mountainous terrain at night.
Cowboy State Daily reported that a UFO expert was unable to determine what the objects were based on the available information. The account includes photographs and a video, but the material alone has not produced a verified identification. Further documentation—such as synchronized observations from multiple locations, precise timestamps, flight and satellite data, and calibrated video—would be needed to assess the sightings more conclusively.
